Workshop 6 -

Podcasting

Workshop Description:

Participants will be introduced to the four stages of making a podcast.

Participants will learn how to make a podcast from scratch (plan, record, edit and produce).

Workshop attendees will have the chance to work hands on with Mark on their idea, learn about equipment, record audio and promoting their podcast.

Key Takeaways:

  1. Understanding Your Audience

    • Identify your target demographic.

    • Research preferences and behaviours to tailor content that resonates.

  2. Choosing the Right Format

    • Explore various podcast formats: interviews, solo episodes, panel discussions, and narrative storytelling.

    • Consider what aligns best with your brand and audience needs.

  3. Content Planning and Strategy

    • Develop a content calendar to maintain consistency.

    • Plan episodes around themes or topics relevant to your business and audience interests.

  4. Investing in Quality Production

    • Use decent equipment for recording and editing, including microphones and audio software.

    • Quality audio can significantly impact listener retention and engagement.

  5. Promoting Your Podcast

    • Utilise social media, email newsletters, and your website to promote episodes.

    • Collaborate with guests or other podcasters to expand your reach.

  6. Engaging with Your Audience

    • Encourage listener feedback and interaction through social media or direct contact.

    • Consider creating a community around your podcast for deeper engagement.

  7. Analysing Metrics

    • Monitor key performance indicators such as downloads, listener demographics, and engagement rates.

    • Use insights to refine your content and marketing strategies.

  8. Monetisation Options

    • Explore potential revenue streams: sponsorships, merchandise, and listener donations.

    • Assess which options align with your brand values and audience interests.

  9. Legal Considerations

    • Be aware of copyright issues, especially with music and guest contributions.

    • Ensure you have a clear understanding of privacy laws concerning audience data.

  10. Continuous Learning and Adaptation

    • Stay updated on podcasting trends and industry developments.

    • Be open to feedback and willing to adapt your approach as needed.

Activity:

  1. Group Brainstorming (20 mins)

    • Divide participants into small groups of 3-4.

    • Each group selects a business or niche they want to target with their podcast.

    • Using a whiteboard, groups brainstorm potential topics, episode formats (interviews, panel discussions, storytelling), and target audience demographics.

  2. Outline Development (15 mins)

    • Each group creates a basic outline for a podcast episode. They should include:

      • Episode title

      • Description of the episode content

      • Key points or segments

      • Call to action (what they want listeners to do after the episode)

    • Encourage creativity and practical thinking, ensuring each group considers what makes their podcast unique.

  3. Group Presentations (10 mins)

    • Groups present their outlines to the workshop participants.

    • Allow time for feedback and suggestions from the other participants to foster a collaborative learning environment.

Length of workshop:

  • Two hours.
