Aliens, Alternate Timelines and Artificial Intelligence on display in Mandurah

Over 55 Mandurah and regional WA film enthusiasts walked the red carpet for an international sci-fi film premiere and learned from award winning creative experts on the weekend. 

The second Space Brains Productions Sci-Fi Film Festival, an international science fiction film festival, occurred on Saturday 17th June 2023 in multiple spaces across Mandurah.

Participants enjoyed the hands-on industry workshops at WOTSO Mandurah. 

Space Brains co-hosts Surrey Hughes and Mark Regan, lead a unique podcasting workshop to enthusiastic participants. The pair shared their experience from crafting 101 podcasts episodes.

A writing workshop followed taught by gifted and world-renowned sci-fi author Stephen Dedman, teaching practical writing techniques for budding writers.

Following the workshops, audiences walked the red carpet, mingled with celebrities, and had their photo taken by the paparazzi.

International multi-award-winning feature filmmaker, Luke Sparke (his Occupation Film Series can be found on Netflix) launched the film festival. Luke shared his extensive experience of being a filmmaker and detailed his insights into the industry for budding filmmakers.

Audience members then were treated to watch the greatest short sci-fi films from the across entire universe on the big screen at Reading Cinemas Mandurah.

Mark Regan, award winning filmmaker and festival director said: “Space Brains Productions goal is to elevate and promote the creative arts in Mandurah. We had many locals attend but also creatives from all across Australia. The festival has grown again this year and we have received numerous positive feedback from across the globe helping grow Mandurah’s creative reputation.”

Surrey Hughes, sci-fi author and festival coordinator said: “The festival was a massive success. Participants attended to learn all about the sci-fi films, filmmaking, and writing. We have built the festival to inspire, teach and launch the next generations of local film creatives.”

The Space Brains Sci-Fi Film Festival is a competition for independent science fiction filmmakers to highlight their films and talents. The festival draws particular focus on the work of regional Western Australian filmmakers to help give them a platform to speak about their projects.
